The Covington Motor Vehicle Parking Authority has introduced the "Green Lot" at 212 E. 8th St. to tackle the demand for parking in Covington and to improve what was previously a deteriorating asphalt lot surrounded by a chain link fence. The revamped parking area will feature new asphalt layers, solar lights, and newly planted trees, including Kentucky’s state tree, the tulip poplar.
Kyle Snyder, Executive Director of the Covington Motor Vehicle Parking Authority, noted, “The Parking Authority is diligently working to improve the city’s public spaces. While we are focused on providing safe and affordable parking options, it is also our goal to ensure that public parking areas are visually attractive consistent with the surrounding neighborhood.” The lot's natural slope will aid in directing rainwater runoff into newly added landscaping.
The Green Lot will also serve the parking needs arising from SparkHaus, an entrepreneurial hub at 727 Madison Ave. which occupies the former Sims Building.
In related news, the Parking Authority has decided to take control of parking management at the John R. Green building. Previously, a $2.5 million contribution by the city for the John R. Green Lofts secured ownership of 92 parking spaces by the city. However, the arrangement with the apartment complex did not yield revenue, prompting the authority to step in. Snyder explained, “We’re trying to find the right balance, managing parking for the greater good and generating funds to improve and grow our parking assets, all to make Covington an even better place to live, work, and play.”
Green Lot parking permits are available for $30 per month. More information can be obtained by contacting ABM Parking Services or visiting their website.
