Covington seeks nominations for preservation excellence awards honoring historic building rehabs

The City of Covington's Historic Preservation Office is now accepting nominations for the Covington Preservation Excellence Awards. These awards aim to honor projects that have preserved or revitalized historic buildings within the community.

"The awards honor projects that have preserved or revitalized historic buildings throughout our community," stated Kaitlin Bryan, Covington Historic Preservation Officer.

Nominations must be submitted by 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, April 1. The awards recognize individuals or organizations for preservation projects completed between January and December 2024. Winners will be selected by the City's Economic Development staff, and nomination forms are available on the Covington Preservation Excellence Award Program webpage.

Awards will be presented in five categories:

- Exterior Restoration-Residential: Recognizes residential projects that restored a building's exterior with exceptional care for its historic fabric and setting.

- Exterior Restoration Mixed-Use/Commercial: Acknowledges mixed-use or commercial structures where the exterior was restored with attention to historical details.

- Adaptive Re-use Residential: Celebrates successful adaptive reuse of residential properties while retaining historic materials as key design elements.

- Adaptive Re-use Mixed-Use Commercial: Honors adaptive reuse of mixed-use or commercial properties maintaining historical integrity in new designs.

- Interior Excellence: Awards outstanding achievement in preserving, restoring, or rehabilitating building interiors.

"Award-winning projects will embody the goals of preserving, protecting, and celebrating Covington’s built heritage and its unique sense of place," Bryan emphasized.

To nominate a property, complete a nomination form and submit it with supporting documents to the City of Covington’s Historic Preservation Office at City Hall, 20 W. Traditionally held in May during National Historic Preservation Month, this year's award ceremony will coincide with the Covington Authenti-CITY awards during National Economic Development Week from May 11 to May 17. Details regarding the ceremony's location, date, and time are yet to be announced.
