The city of Covington, Kentucky experienced a year of significant progress and development in 2024, marked by a variety of projects aimed at enhancing the city's infrastructure, economy, and community life. The transformation of the 23-acre former IRS site into the Covington Central Riverfront mixed-use neighborhood has been a focal point, with developments including housing, retail spaces, and public art installations.
Covington's efforts to preserve its historical heritage were highlighted by the legal actions taken to stabilize the childhood home of artist Frank Duveneck. Meanwhile, the city's small business support programs continued to thrive, providing incentives for rent and façade improvements to local businesses.
Infrastructure advancements included traffic safety improvements on the Brent Spence Bridge and ongoing streetscape projects designed to enhance pedestrian accessibility and encourage private investment. Additionally, new recreational facilities like Austinburg Park have been completed, offering updated amenities for residents.
Economic achievements were also recognized with awards from organizations such as Money magazine and the International Economic Development Council. In terms of governance, Ron Washington was elected as mayor alongside new city commissioners. A transition from a City Manager form of government to a Mayor-Council system is set to occur in two years.
Former Mayor Joe Meyer reflected on his tenure by stating, “Sometimes things turn on a dime and sometimes it’s a long, strategic route, but year in and year out we have made steady progress on and taken some bold moves toward strengthening Covington’s economy.” His sentiment underscores the city's commitment to continual improvement across various sectors.
