Covington encourages recycling of non-working holiday lights with four drop-off locations

Elizabeth Wetzel Director of Special Projects & Inter-Governmental Affairs | City of Covington | City of Covington

Last year, the City of Covington collected 625 pounds of non-working holiday lights through a recycling initiative. This effort, which saw an increase of 118 pounds from the previous year, is part of a partnership with Cohen Recycling and the Keep Covington Beautiful program managed by The Center for Great Neighborhoods.

The recycling program will start on December 1 and continue until February 1, 2025. Sheila Fields, the City's Solid Waste & Recycling manager, emphasized the importance of this initiative: "Little by little, people are beginning to take advantage of this easy way they can protect the environment, and our goal as always is to top the year before."

Fields highlighted that holiday light strings contain materials like plastic, glass, copper, and lead. Disposing of them in landfills poses environmental risks. Instead, residents are encouraged to recycle these items at designated drop-off locations.

Four drop-off sites have been established in Covington:

- The lobby at City Hall on West Pike Street.

- Covington Fire Department’s Station No. 5 on Hands Pike.

- The lobby at The Center for Great Neighborhoods on M.L. King Jr. Blvd./W. 12th St.

- The lobby at Covington Public Works on Russell Street.

Kenton County also offers eight additional drop-off spots including one at their Administration Building in Covington. Campbell County is participating as well.

The event accepts all types of string lights including traditional and LED bulbs. Other electric decorations such as projectors or motors from inflatable characters can be recycled at Cohen Recycling Centers after calling ahead for details.
