City offices in Covington, Kentucky will be closed on Thursday and Friday this week in observance of Thanksgiving. This announcement comes as the nation prepares to celebrate the holiday on the "fourth Thursday in November," a date officially set by President Franklin D. Roosevelt 83 years ago through a joint resolution of Congress.
While historians continue to debate when and where the first Thanksgiving was celebrated in what is now the United States, City Hall has made it clear that any urgent business should be completed by Wednesday. Offices will reopen on Monday.
In addition to announcing the closures, local officials shared some Thanksgiving-related advice. Residents are reminded to thoroughly cook their turkeys, though venison can remain slightly pink or red inside. The message humorously noted that drumsticks are considered the best part of a turkey and advised caution when serving canned cranberry sauce.
Other tips included thawing out turkeys ahead of time, prioritizing family conversations over watching TV or using phones, avoiding political discussions to prevent arguments, and refraining from drinking and driving during the holiday festivities.
