Volunteers are being called to participate in a tree-planting event scheduled for Saturday morning in Peaselburg, Covington. The initiative is organized by the Covington Urban Forestry Board and the City's Forestry Division as part of their biannual community tree planting efforts.

The goal is to plant at least 52 trees along Russell Street and W. 20th Street. Volunteers are asked to gather at Glenn O. Swing Elementary School's parking lot, located at 501 W. 19th St., just before 9 a.m. They will work until noon or until all trees have been planted.

Participants are advised to wear boots or sturdy shoes and clothes suitable for getting dirty. Bringing gloves and shovels is encouraged, although some equipment will be available on-site. Refreshments will be provided by Keep Covington Beautiful.

Covington Urban Forester Patrick Moore emphasized the dual benefits of these events: "Tree plantings are both fun and productive," he said, noting that they foster community engagement while enhancing local aesthetics.

Moore also highlighted the long-term health and environmental advantages of increased tree coverage: "Not only are tree-line streets aesthetically nicer but it’s also scientifically proven that people who live in areas with a lot of trees enjoy better health," he explained, adding that trees help filter pollutants, provide shade, and reduce noise pollution.

The species selected for planting include black gum (tupelos), Kentucky yellowwood, redbud, hawthorn, and Osage orange cultivars—chosen based on suitability for each location.
