Over the next month, residents of Covington, Kentucky, have the opportunity to provide input on how approximately $2 million in federal funds should be allocated for housing and community development. The comment period runs from June 9 through July 10.

These funds are expected to come from the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) and HOME Investment Partnerships Program, which are both administered by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.

Drafts available for public comment include the Annual Action Plan for the CDBG and HOME programs, as well as a Five-Year Strategic Plan that outlines long-term goals. "The Annual Action Plan and Five-Year Strategic Plan are our guide to investing these federal funds to both make people’s lives better and strengthen our neighborhoods," said Jeremy Wallace, the City’s Federal Grants Manager.

A public hearing is scheduled for Tuesday, June 24, prior to a City Commission meeting. Written comments can be submitted via email to Wallace at jwallace@covingtonky.gov or by calling (859) 292-2147.

The CDBG program focuses on services and programs in low- and moderate-income areas, such as infrastructure improvements, crime prevention, economic development, and early literacy programs. This year, $1,409,780 is available in CDBG funding.

Covington participates in a consortium with several nearby cities for the HOME program. This year's budget includes $672,734.30 in HOME funding aimed at housing-related initiatives like forgivable loans for homebuyers and creating affordable housing units.
