The Covington Academy of Heritage Trades (CAHT) is set to offer spring seminars aimed at equipping participants with skills for historic restoration. The academy, located in Covington, Kentucky, focuses on teaching techniques necessary for restoring older homes and buildings.
Three two-week seminars will be held beginning in March: Historic masonry and plastering from March 17-27, stained glass window repair from April 14-24, and historic carpentry from May 19-30. Classes will take place Monday through Thursday from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Enzweiler Building Institute Covington Campus. Each seminar costs $400, with a $100 deposit required upon registration.
Brian Miller, executive vice president of the Building Industry Association of Northern Kentucky (BIANKY), emphasized the value of these seminars as a pathway to a new career. "The Covington Academy of Heritage Trades’ spring seminars are an incredible opportunity for anyone looking to develop specialized skills in historic renovation," Miller stated.
Miller highlighted that past participants have praised the program's hands-on training approach. He noted that professionals skilled in historic restoration earn on average nine percent more than those in the broader construction industry. "By honing these techniques, trade and professional workers can not only expand their expertise but also access a growing market with significant economic potential," he added.
The CAHT utilizes a historic building on Madison Avenue as its primary site for practical learning activities. Students collaborate with experienced craftspeople dedicated to their trades.
Supported by the City and administered by the Enzweiler Trade Building Institute—a trade school founded by BIANKY—the academy offers apprenticeship-style training in skilled construction trades. Enrollment is now open for those interested in joining the CAHT for the 2025-26 school year, which marks the launch of its first two-year certificate program with a heritage trades curriculum.
