Covington residents who own firearms can now obtain free cable-style gun locks through a program organized by the Covington Human Rights Commission. These locks, which include a padlock with a key, are designed to enhance safety by preventing rounds from being chambered and magazines from being loaded. They are suitable for use with various types of firearms, including semi-auto pistols, revolvers, rifles, and shotguns.

The locks are available for pick-up at the Covington Police Headquarters located at 1 Police Memorial Drive during weekdays from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Residents must provide proof of residency in Covington but should not bring their guns to the station. "DO NOT bring your weapon to the police department as doing so is a safety risk to everyone," said Capt. Justin Bradbury. He also emphasized that officers cannot assist in placing the lock on the gun.

Approximately 80 locks are available as part of this initiative. To aid gun owners in properly applying these locks and understanding general gun safety, the Police Department’s Community Liaison Unit has created an instructional video featuring Sgt. Rachel White.

Mike Steinman, vice chairman of the Covington Human Rights Commission, highlighted that this program aims to reduce injuries and deaths caused by firearms, whether accidental or intentional. “Too many persons have fallen victim to being shot,” Steinman stated. He expressed hope that these locks would help protect children and neighbors by reducing gun violence and accidental shootings.

Capt. Bradbury reiterated support for the Commission's goal of preventing avoidable deaths due to firearms: “We look forward to getting these free gun locks in the hands of as many Covington gun owners as we can,” he said. “If it saves even one life, it is worth it the effort.”
