The Covington Board of Commissioners recently bid farewell to outgoing Mayor Joe Meyer and Commissioner Steve Hayden, both of whom decided not to seek re-election. As part of the tradition, the Commission passed resolutions honoring their contributions during a meeting on December 17.
City Clerk Susan Ellis read the resolutions, with Meyer and Hayden joined by fellow commissioners Ron Washington, Tim Downing, and Shannon Smith in reflecting on their time in office. The atmosphere was light-hearted at times, with Meyer joking about the age gap between him and his colleagues and Hayden humorously criticizing the acoustics of the Commission chambers.
Despite serving a relatively short term since August 2023, Hayden was recognized for his involvement in various boards and committees around Covington since moving to the city in 2012. "Hayden has been a low-key but steady presence on the Commission," read one resolution. Fellow commissioners praised him as a valuable resource with extensive knowledge of Covington's history.
Meyer completed two four-year terms as mayor after previously serving in multiple public roles including 15 years in the Kentucky General Assembly. His leadership was highlighted for significantly contributing to Covington's development. "Meyer has been a fierce and vocal advocate for Covington," stated his resolution.
During prepared remarks, Meyer expressed pride in Covington's progress over nearly five decades since he began living there. He commended the city's growth and urged continued focus on community values under incoming Mayor Ron Washington's leadership.
Following this meeting, new members of the 2025-26 Covington Board of Commissioners were sworn in officially for terms beginning January 1. A ceremonial swearing-in event is scheduled for January 3.
