Rental scooters are a frequent sight in Covington, Kentucky. However, if these scooters are left or "abandoned" on city right-of-ways such as sidewalks, streets, or alleys for more than 24 hours, residents and business owners have a course of action to follow.

“Contact the City and we will see to it that the rental scooter is removed,” stated Assistant Neighborhood Services Director Walter Mace. He emphasized that scooters abandoned for over 24 hours in public spaces are considered abandoned equipment.

Neighborhood Services Director Brandon Holmes highlighted the importance of removing these scooters to ensure safety for vulnerable city residents. “Abandoned scooters left lying around on Covington’s streets and sidewalks are particularly dangerous to our residents who rely on wheelchairs or are otherwise disabled,” Holmes said. “We want to be mindful of everyone’s safety and remove unnecessary obstacles when we can.”

Residents or business owners who come across an abandoned rental scooter should report it to Covington Neighborhood Services Administrative Assistant Allyson Schaefer by calling (859) 292-2154 or emailing Allyson.Schaefer@covingtonky.gov.

Once reported, the City’s Department of Public Works will impound the scooter for safekeeping. The fee for impoundment is $50. If the scooter is not claimed within 30 days, ownership will transfer to the city, which will then dispose of it accordingly.

“We’ve created what we believe is an efficient and easy process to ensure that we can quickly and safely remove these abandoned scooters.” Mace remarked.
