A veteran officer has rejoined the Covington Police Department under a retire-rehire program. William Kelley, who retired on July 31 after more than 23 years of service with the department, was sworn in again today. He will serve on a one-year contract through a program approved by the Kentucky General Assembly in 2016 for officers with at least 20 years of experience.

"Welcome back," said Mayor Joe Meyer to Kelley during the swearing-in ceremony. Kelley responded, "I look forward to being back."

Police Chief Brian Valenti highlighted the importance of this program, stating that Kelley is the tenth veteran officer rehired under it. "It’s a very valuable program for us, especially in an era where departments across the country are having challenges recruiting," Valenti explained.

Kelley brings 25 years of overall public safety experience and will be joining the Patrol Bureau. His previous roles within Covington included serving as Commander of the Patrol Bureau, Criminal Investigations, and the D-Team, as well as Accreditation Manager.
